Your hotel checkout might be at 11 a.m., but your flight from JFK, LaGuardia, or Newark may not leave until the evening. Instead of spending those final hours sitting in a hotel lobby or heading to the airport too early, use them to explore one of New York City’s most scenic areas: DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
There’s just one problem: doing it with a suitcase is a lot less enjoyable.
Start Your Last Day in DUMBO
DUMBO—short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass—is one of Brooklyn’s most recognizable neighborhoods. Start around Washington Street, where the Manhattan Bridge is framed between historic brick buildings.
From there, wander toward the waterfront. The neighborhood is compact enough to explore on foot, but its cobblestone streets are another reason you probably won’t want to drag rolling luggage behind you.
Nearby Brooklyn Bridge Park stretches along the East River and offers waterfront views of Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, and New York Harbor. The park is free and currently open daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., although individual facilities have their own hours.
Walk Along the Brooklyn Waterfront
Continue through the park toward Pier 1 and Fulton Ferry Landing. This is an easy place to slow down on your final day rather than rushing from attraction to attraction.
Grab coffee or lunch nearby, sit along the waterfront, and take in the Manhattan skyline. Brooklyn Bridge Park includes several different piers and waterfront areas, so you can make this part of the day as short or long as your flight schedule allows.
Finish With a Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge
If you have enough time before heading to the airport, finish the afternoon by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge toward Lower Manhattan.
The Brooklyn Bridge connects Brooklyn Heights with Lower Manhattan and has a dedicated pedestrian promenade. The bridge and its approaches extend just over 6,000 feet, so give yourself enough time to walk, stop for photos, and navigate the crowds.
Once you reach Manhattan, you’ll be close to City Hall and the Financial District.
What Should You Do With Your Luggage?
Instead of bringing your suitcase through DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and across the bridge, Bagzee can pick up your luggage from your hotel, Airbnb, or another NYC address and transport it toward the airport while you continue exploring.
When it’s time for your flight, you meet your luggage at the terminal and check it with your airline yourself. Bagzee currently offers NYC airport luggage service for JFK, LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark (EWR).
That means your last day can look less like:
Hotel → luggage storage → retrieve bags → airport
and more like:
Hotel checkout → DUMBO → Brooklyn Bridge Park → Brooklyn Bridge → airport
Your last day in New York doesn’t have to be a travel day spent managing suitcases. With your luggage already taken care of, you can squeeze a few more hours—and a few more classic NYC views—out of the trip.
