New York City has three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). If you’re staying in Manhattan, choosing between them can make a surprisingly big difference on travel day.
So, which NYC airport is easiest to get to from Manhattan? The answer depends on where you’re staying, how you’re traveling, and—often overlooked—how much luggage you’re carrying.
LaGuardia Airport (LGA): Closest to Manhattan
For many Manhattan travelers, LaGuardia is the most convenient airport geographically. Located in Queens, LGA is especially convenient for Midtown and the Upper East Side.
The downside is that LaGuardia doesn’t have a direct subway or rail connection. Public-transit travelers generally use a bus connection, such as the Q70 LaGuardia Link, to connect with the subway or Long Island Rail Road.

JFK Airport: Best for Public Transit Options
JFK is farther from Manhattan than LaGuardia, but it has a major advantage: rail connectivity.
Travelers can combine the AirTrain with the subway or Long Island Rail Road to travel between Manhattan and JFK. That makes JFK relatively predictable when road traffic is heavy.
The tradeoff is luggage. Navigating stations, platforms, transfers, escalators, and crowded trains with multiple suitcases can turn an inexpensive airport trip into an exhausting one.
JFK is also a major international gateway, so many visitors won’t have much choice about which airport they use.
Newark Airport (EWR): Surprisingly Convenient for Midtown
Although Newark Liberty International Airport is in New Jersey, travelers shouldn’t automatically assume it’s the least convenient NYC airport.
NJ TRANSIT connects Newark Airport with New York Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. NJ TRANSIT estimates the trip to New York Penn at approximately 30 minutes, although travelers should always allow additional time for airport connections and possible delays.
For someone staying near Penn Station, Chelsea, or the west side of Midtown, EWR can therefore be surprisingly practical.
So, Which NYC Airport Is Easiest?
For distance from Manhattan, LaGuardia often wins. For rail access, JFK and Newark offer advantages. And if you’re staying near Penn Station, Newark may be much more convenient than its New Jersey address suggests.
