Things to Do in the Flatiron District and Union Square on Your Last Day in NYC

The Flatiron District and Union Square are excellent places to spend your last day in New York City. This compact route combines landmark architecture, two lively parks, local food and shopping without requiring a packed sightseeing schedule.

It is more enjoyable without a suitcase. Bagzee can collect luggage from your NYC hotel, Airbnb or another address and transport it toward the airport while you continue exploring. Its airport page currently lists service across JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.

Start at the Flatiron Building

Begin at Fifth Avenue, Broadway and 23rd Street, where the wedge-shaped Flatiron Building creates one of Manhattan’s most recognizable views.

The best perspective is from the pedestrian plaza near Madison Square Park. Pause for photographs, but also notice the surrounding architecture. The district sits where uptown and downtown, commercial streets and residential blocks meet, giving it a busy but walkable character.

Take a Break in Madison Square Park

Cross into Madison Square Park for a quieter start to the day. The park forms a green center for the Flatiron and NoMad area, surrounded by historic buildings and modern towers.

Find a bench and enjoy the contrast between the trees and the traffic on Broadway, Madison Avenue and 23rd Street. This is also a good moment to check your flight and decide how much of the route you can complete comfortably.

Walk South Along Broadway

From Madison Square Park, follow Broadway south toward Union Square. The redesigned corridor connects the neighborhoods through pedestrian plazas, shared streets and a two-way bicycle connection, making the walk part of the experience.

Browse bookstores, design shops and clothing stores along the way, but shop with a purpose. A final gift or snack is more manageable than accumulating several new bags before a flight.

Visit the Union Square Greenmarket

Union Square Greenmarket is the route’s standout food stop. GrowNYC’s flagship market began in 1976 and can bring together as many as 140 regional farmers, fishers and bakers during peak season.

The year-round market operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Browse seasonal produce, flowers, bread, cheese and locally made items, or pick up something small for the journey home.

Union Square remains worth visiting when the stalls are absent. The park is a long-standing gathering place surrounded by shops, cafés and busy city streets.

Have Lunch Near Union Square

For lunch, choose a café, market vendor or restaurant near Broadway, University Place or Irving Place. Keeping the meal close to the route avoids spending your final hours crossing town.

With your luggage already handled, you can sit in a smaller restaurant, browse the market and leave directly for the airport instead of returning to a storage counter.

Plan Around Your Flight

With about three hours, photograph the Flatiron Building, relax in Madison Square Park and walk down Broadway to Union Square.

With four to six hours, add shopping, the Greenmarket and a longer lunch. Avoid adding distant attractions simply because several subway lines meet at Union Square.

Leave enough time to reach the airport, retrieve your luggage, check in and clear security. Bagzee removes the return trip to your hotel, allowing your final New York hours to end naturally at Union Square rather than beside a pile of suitcases.
