Things to Do on the Upper West Side on Your Last Day in NYC
The Upper West Side is ideal for a relaxed final day in New York City. Between Central Park, Riverside Park, the American Museum of Natural History, brownstone-lined streets and classic food shops, you can fill several hours without crossing Manhattan repeatedly.
It is also best explored on foot. Bagzee can collect luggage from your NYC hotel, Airbnb or other address and transport it toward JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, so you can continue sightseeing before retrieving your bags and completing airline check-in.
Start in Central Park
Enter Central Park near West 72nd Street and begin at Strawberry Fields. The landscaped memorial sits across from the Dakota and includes the Imagine mosaic honoring John Lennon.
From there, walk toward Bethesda Terrace and Fountain. This compact route includes wooded paths, lake views and some of Central Park’s most recognizable architecture without requiring a long journey north.
Keep the visit simple on a flight day. Spend time at the terrace, take a few photographs and sit near the water rather than trying to cover every major park landmark.
Choose the Museum or the Neighborhood
The American Museum of Natural History stands on Central Park West between West 77th and 81st Streets. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and advance tickets can make entry faster.
The museum can easily occupy an afternoon, so treat it as your main attraction. Choose several halls or one ticketed exhibition instead of rushing through every floor.
Travelers who prefer an outdoor day can skip the museum and wander between Central Park West, Columbus Avenue and Broadway. Look for carved brownstone façades, tree-lined sidewalks and neighborhood businesses that make the Upper West Side feel more residential than Midtown.
Stop for an Upper West Side Lunch
Broadway, Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue offer cafés, bagel shops and long-established restaurants. For a distinctly local stop, visit Zabar’s at Broadway and West 80th Street. The family business opened there in 1934 and remains known for smoked fish, cheeses, baked goods and prepared foods.
Pick up lunch, find an edible souvenir or eat nearby. Without suitcases taking up space in a narrow shop or restaurant, it is easier to browse and continue directly toward the airport.
Walk Toward the Hudson River
For a quieter final hour, head west to Riverside Park. Designed in its earliest form during the 1870s, the park follows the Hudson River and offers walking paths, trees and river views.
A short walk near West 72nd or West 79th Street provides a peaceful contrast to Central Park’s busier attractions. Sit beside the Hudson, watch boats pass and check your flight timing before leaving.
Finish at Lincoln Center
When your route takes you south, end at Lincoln Center between West 62nd and 65th Streets. Walk through the performing-arts campus, see the fountain and check the schedule for a public event or tour. The David Rubenstein Atrium also hosts free programming and offers an indoor place to pause.
With three hours, combine Strawberry Fields, a neighborhood walk and lunch. With four to six hours, add the museum, Riverside Park or Lincoln Center—but not all three.
Bagzee removes the need to return to your hotel or a storage counter. Leave enough time to collect your luggage, check in and clear airport security. Your final Upper West Side hours can then feel like part of the trip rather than time spent waiting to leave.
